Nyarlko #15 — Dragonball

See? I referenced it. Why aren’t you laughing!?

Impressions:

And in a hilarious twist that nobody could have ever seen coming, the big baddies were actualy after the crappy book Mahiro accidentally stole. And use it to make a Dragonball reference. Not a joke, mind you, unless you count "What if they fought a Dragonball giant ape" as a joke. Actually, this episode felt even more haphazardly thrown together than usual, especially in the first half. The fake "pretend like the heroine is having sex because she’s flushed and moaning, but is actually doing something slightly more innocent" joke came out of nowhere and the punchline was just… she’s doing it for giggles. Same with the little storytelling thing. It’s like Xebec themselves are aliens trying to emulate cliche humor without actually understanding what the jokes are.

The second half’s biggest sin was the awful insert song that made no sense. For the three minutes that it played, I think there were two attacks. Granted, that fight that lasted most of the second half probably only had about six total, but is them standing around in a circle talking about how special they and their CQC is (wow, that joke sure hasn’t been pounded into the ground) really the place for an insert song instead of actually fighting the thing? Maybe it’s some kind of meta joke about how they can’t even do a good job making fun of their own cliches. I’d rather make fun of lesbian pirate surfer queens though. Oh, and Hastur unsurprisngly transforms too into possibly the most uninteresting thing possible, a slightly taller version of himself with a deeper voice. Is there even supposed to be a joke there, Xebec? Do you remember what show you’re making?

Next Episode:

Not lesbian pirate surfer queens.
